Corporal Stiers was the acting chief of section,Paul Cross was acting No. 1 man firing the piece and Bernard Hurst was acting gunner, handling the sights. The shell exploded in the gun, tearing the gun to pieces. Paul was instantly killed, the breechblock flying open and striking him in the chest. Bernard lost both of his hands, and one of his legs was broken in two places. He died on his way to the hospital.
