Texan Nears Halfway Mark In His Dance Across U.S.By Darwinne HakansonThe Pritt Daily Tribun*The Auodaud PressPRATT, Kan. (AP)—A couple of hundred miles more of dancing and a 55-year-old Texan will have reached the halfway mark of his destination, the East coast.Lewis Larrymore Walker has danced more than 1,400 miles along the highways since leaving the Pacific coast May 2, 1962. He plans to end his dance in the New York area sometime this fall.The dancing Texan reached Pratt last week.A handshake wager 32 years ago is what prompted Larrymore (his professional dancing title) to start the cross-country dance. After completing a dance marathon-popular in those days — he remarked that “someday I will dance across the United States.Larrhmore has taught dancing for over 25 years. The son of a cotton farmer, he learned to dance from Negro workers in the cotton fields. At one time, he had a chain of 15 dance studios in west Texas and New Mexico.Robert Vaughn of Amarilio. Tex., son of Larrymore's twin sister, is accompanying his uncle and driving a travel-inn motor home. Vaughn, a school teacher, joined Larrymore after the close of school in May. The dancer has had several other drivers.Larrymore recalls being inPratt during World War II when he served in the Air Force and was processed at the Pratt Air Base. He flew 35 missions in a B17.A transistor radio furnishes music for his dancing. The kind of dance steps he does depends on the music that is being received. He prefers long gliding waltz stps or running fox trots, but has incorporated some unusual steps, the Drag and the Limp” into his routine.“After dancing 10 to 15 miles, the Larrymore Drag just comes naturally and the Larrymore Limp is induced by blisters and wrinkled or ill-fitting soks, he says.He doesn’t wear any type of dancing shoe but prefers a canvas style. He claims he hasn’t worn out a pair of shoes although he admits a couple of pairs that have had about 600 miles of use show plenty of wear.He has encountered just about all kinds of roads and weather, from 17 to 110 degrees of heat.Larrymore says he averages about three miles an hour.
