When the steamer Phil adelphla with Capt. Carson started from St, Louis for Portage des Sioux, on the boat's arrival at Alton It land ed at the levee in front of the new City Hal) at Alton. The passengers went ashore and looked over the new-city building and the town and then ‘ went back to the boat. The next place they landed was at Portage and It wae a big crowd that greeted the boat. It was an enjoyable excursion.The name old na#es have been ee long identified with the old place that It is hsrd to forget them i», after yesrs I was on various steamboats and we made the landing regularly. [During the Hayes Wheeler campaign in the presidential year, the first torch light procession chartered the Alton ferry boat and went to Portage des Sioux and had s good old time In after years the boats made dally landings. Ths principal shipper Henry Pujol shipped the Whit* Sr, Charles corn to St. Ixuls The old names are still with them.”
