General:I have the honor to report that, in obedience to orders, dated June 8th, 1862,1 at once proceeded with my command, composed of the 9 th Michigan, Lieut. Col. Park-hurst, 38th Indiana, Capt Wm. L. Carter, four companies of the 1st Wisconsin, Major Bingham, and one company of the 5th Kentucky Cavalry, Capt Clay well, to the bank of the river opposite Chattanooga and were at once opened upon by the enemy with volleys from tneir rifle pits. Availing myself of the best cover at hand for the main line, I deployed forward Co. B, Capt Nunemacher, and Co. H, Lieut. Alex. Martin, of the 38th Indiana. Several companies of the 9th Michigan, names not reported, deployed further down the river, with their right near the bank, which, together with Co. A, Capt. Wheeler, 38th Indiana, and a detachment of sharpshooters, under Lieut. James White, 1stWisconsin, who were thrown forward to the river bank on our left, formed semi-circle before the enemy's works. The enemy sheltered himself behind earthworks and cotton bales, arranged along the water’s edge; driven from these, they took refuge behind a stone wall and the houses on the bank.
