Mtudy prison sceneThis amazing aeries of sketches of the infamous Confederate Andersonvllle. S. C., Prison of the Civil War attracted some interested and excited visitors to its hanging place in the cocktail room at the American Legion Hail this past week. They were Stephen and Joanne Dunn of Hazel, S. Dak. Mrs. Dunn Is the great granddaughter of the man who brought the large drawing back to Sumner following the Civil War. Ha was the late Qeorge Hammetter of Sumner, who was himself a prisoner in this notorious camp. Mr. and Mrs. Dunn were on vacation and passing through Sumner when they stopped for a visit with a cousin, Vetla Hammetter. She told them about the drawing andthey took the opportunity to stop in at the Legion Hall to see it. Of course, the story of the drawing has baen told nearly as many times as the story ot Andersonvllle itself. A prisoner, Thomas O’Doa, made this drawing, which Is actually a large sketch ot the compound, bordered by a series of smaller sketches depictingCrlson life at Andersonvllio. Ho did it all from memory after eing released from the prison following the Civil War. This reportedly Is one of only two of the lithographs of Q’Dea’s original sketches that have survived. The other hangs In the museum at Andersonvllle. Mrs. Dunn said she was particularly excited about this discovery of the tact that Mr greet grandfather had been a prisoner at Andersonvllle end of the chance to see this rare drawing, as she has been compiling Information for a family history.r •. i:.......:•
