Pilot Has Close Call on Mountain' FALLON, Nev. (UP) — The“luckiest pilot in the marinecorps was scheduled to returnto duty Thursday after a brushwith death near the top of 11,-409-foot Mt. Sonora in the High Sierras.Lt. William A. Poe* of LagunaBeach, Calif., was returned to a marine corps winter training center after a party of marines snow-shoed over treacherous snowdrifts for nearly 24 hours to reach him.Poe escaped injury Tuesday when he crash-landed his fighter; plane in heavy snow. The F4Ucorsair, snapped in two bv the! impact, slid to a stop just 20 feet from the edge of a 4.000-footcliff.I Lt. Harry Fitzwatcr, command-jing officer of the air station, reported: “Poe’s okay. He’s in very good condition and not injured at all.”Fellow marine pilots circled ;the area to direct the rescue teamup the mountain. They saw Poefinally start down the peak toward the rescue party.The pilots tried to wave him back, fearing he would be caught by an avalanche, but apparentlyhe thought he was being encouraged to go on.Finally the pilots made him understand that he was to stop his dangerous descent and await the rescue party, which he did.
