henLETTER FROM CARP.pa]The following letter received bv Mr. An drew Kern, of Logan, from his son in Captain Rippey’s Company, now in Kentucky, will he read with interest, as it was written siuce the Pa glorious tight at Spring Mills : Catnnwoj Somerset, Pulaski County, Kt.J I*.]j January '22, jjDear Parents:—I am still well, although be- 0U■ ing very tired from marching. We have marched i for the last four days an average of 1*2 milesper day, through the mud, every step being over fl c shoe-top. You may imagine such marching will tire any man down; but 1 care notihng for the hardships so long as they produce such glorious hit results as this. I suppose you have heard of our dii victory over the rebels, and the death ot General Zollicoffer. I never saw a more complete route ! —the retreat from Wild Cat was nothiug in com jet parison. The rebels left their tents, 500 wagons, ab 1,000 head of horses, 13 pieces artillerv, large co commissary stores, 1,000 bushels of corn, 1,500 /,■)stand of arms, and a great many other things. They had things fixed up the best I ever saw in the army. 1 hey had huts built to winter in, and everything fixed up nicely—thev had plenty to eat and wear. They left tbeir clothes lying in 3 the huts, taking nothing with them, sonnf of,asCOIthem even throwing away their guns and car j tn 3 tridges. Thev had a ateam boat and several 3 ferry boats, which they tied together, crossed over, and then set tire to the steam boat, also to some commissary stores on the other side of the river, I don’t believe that brigade of rebels will ever do any more fighting, they are so badly broken up and scared. I will tell you how the tight commenced : Gen. Thomas’ brigade wad on the Columbia road with uine regiments; Zollicoffer was informed that these m®'» the Columbia road were but two of Gen. Sboepf’sararsothcii1h«regimetjts with a heavy train- He thought he could take his force, whip them out good andtake the train. He was marching on to the cross roadsrP_ » ------J -------- —ww mrj VMI UIVUlt; |, 1 bey came up, made a general attack and fought! fr
