Mrs. Hawley S. JMeDougall, No. 34$ North Beech street. He says;aHand of God Saved Him.“You no doubt read'In. The Herald how our battery was shot up and two men were killed. It was the hand of God that saved me that night.“We had been in position near Marllncourt for several weeks, and one night I was taken ill. The following night we changed our position to a nearby woods. * The section chief had picked me out to work thebreech on a caisson up the road, but the doctor again marked me up for quarters.“They had to put another man Inmy place. That man was another Syracusan, Charles J. Wehner. Later, when the action was at its height, I learned that Wehner had been killed.”Escaped Death Second Time.This wasn’t the only time that Burkett played In luck, however. \As soon as he was able to get back to work he was appointed a dispatch runner.' He worked the job five days and nights before he learned that he had replaced j! runner who had been wounded on this route.“Once I had to get off the road,” he writes, “and travel In No Man’s Land, I hadn’t gone far before I had to tether the horse and make the rest of the trip into the trenches on foot.
