Ateher Thursday assigned a standing committee to study the drafting of an open housing ordinance for Schaumburg.The study follows a recommendation by the Hoffman Estates-Schaumburg Council of Clergy, a nlt;m*denominational group, led by Rabbi H. Gamoran of the Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Hoffman Estates.Rabbi Gamoran told Paddock Publications Friday that his group has also sent a letter recommending open housing legislation to the Hoffman Estates board of trustees.“Since fair housing is a concern everywhere, we feel that inaction by the villages on adoption of this type of ordinance is, itself, a type of action,” Rabbi Gamoran said.ASKED TO MAKE specific recommendations on the ordinance were Trustees Norman “Don” Wonch, chairman of a standing committee, and Raymond Kessel and Gordon Mullins.Village Atty. Jack Siegel drafted the open housing ordinance adopted this month by the Arlington Heights Village board, which also employs SiegelThe first to regulate property sales in the northwest suburbs, the Arlington ordinance does not put any limit on the homeowners right to sell to whomever he chooses. It does require the Realtor to see it, without regard to race, creed, or national origin and to forward any offers of purchase to the seller.TOE ARLINGTON Heights ordinance also spells out penalties for violation*, includingrevocation, up to one year and enables investigations of complaints, attempts at informal conciliation and the right of appeal.Another near-by community, Elk Grove, is considering the draft of a tougher open housing ordinance which would penalize Realtors and property owners for refusal to sell to a financially able buyer, regardless of race, color, religion ancestry or national origin.If adopted, the Elk Grove ordinance would be among the strongest open housing ordinances in the state, similar to legislation in Wheaton, Bloomington and East St. Louis.Besides Arlington, other nearby communities which have “open housing” laws are Wheaton, Elgin, Skokie and Evanston.THE EVANSTON ordinance was also drafted by Siegel and served as a model for the Arlington ordinance.Atcher Thursday indicated that “fair housing” laws proposed for Schaumburg would only affect Realtors.Schaumburg has been faced with no serious racial problems In its history. Some Negro families live in the village.
