Hooks Died in Wash- jington on Saturday. /(Special to The Bulletin.) jWashington, Jan. 27.—Mr.?. Annie E. i Hooks, willow of Charles A. Hooks, of ' Willimantic, for many years messen- , ger to the military committee of the | senate,- died in this city Saturday i morning. jMrs. Hooks was nearly seventy years, j she became famous as one of the j nurses who was decorated for distin- ;I guished services during the war She jwas connected with the army of the , Potomac- and was present at most of j the battles in which that army took part. Mounted on a pony, Mrs. Hooks, j | supplied with bandages and other j equipment of her profession, was near- ,I ly always in the front rank. On sec- j eral occasions during the campaigns j in which she took part it was neces- j sary for officers to send her to the rear under a guard to protect her from j grave immediate danger. She was ;; pre’s-ented by General Birney, after one | great battie, with the Kearny Cross | of Honor on the battlefield. She was | one of the very few women to re- j ceive this badge of distinguished s-er- j vices and it was highly prised by her j during her life. She received testi- ■! monials from Generals Birney, Rich- , ardson, Handcock and Pierce, and from Colon-els Poe and Hayman. iPrior to the war she lived in the state of Michigan and went to the j'front with a regiment from that state. She was married to Captain Hooks after the war.Mrs. Hooks was buried at Arlington XationaJ cemetery this afternoon by the side of her husband who died three j years ago.
