Welcome For Special Guest Is Cancelled Due To Fort ClosureA welcoming meeting for a special visitor from Germany has been cancelled due to Governor Johnson’s decision to close Fort Stanton.The special visitor is Viola Daehne Guenther, daughter of the captain of the crew that was interned at Fort Stanton during World War II. The internees were not prisonerstof war but were considered guests of the United States for the duration of the war.Viola and her husband had planned the return to Fort Stanton to once again visit the land where her father and his crew stayed those long years.The welcoming meeting was to include people who were at Fort Stanton and in the area during the time Captain Daehne was here. It would give Viola the opportunity to meet face-to-face some of the people responsible for helping her father pass the time as happily as he could being away from his family and fatherland.Viola and her husbandHarald live in Bremen, Germany and made their firstvisit to Fort Stanton in 1990. The visit was emotional for Viola, as she said in a tribute to the people of Lincoln County that was published in the Lincoln County News May 17, 1990. Portions of her tributeare as follows:After long years of hesitation I have finally visited Fort Stanton, the place where my father unwillingly spent four and a half years in the primeof his life.He was the unfortunate Captain of the German 32,000 ton passenger ship Columbus who pursued by British destroyers, had been ordered to scuttle his ship on Dec. 19, 1939 some 300 miles off theAmerican coast.Crew and captain were rescued by an American cruiser, spent some time at Ellis Island, NY, Angel Island, CA and were finally interned at Fort Stanton.'The first impression upon(SEE PAGE 7)
