At about this time the Navajo Chief, Cayetano, made a separate peace with the Utes and removed his entire band to the Ute country. Some months later—in July, 1859 — Cayetano and his band were reported as still living north of the San Juan on the La Plata River. The peace treaty concluded between the military and the Navajo on December 25, 1858, brought about a temporary cessation of Navajo-Ute hostilities, but by August of 1859, hostilities were resumed and Lt. M, Cogswell reported that the Ute leader Cabezon and others had deserted the rivers west of the Rio Pledra . . . fearing an inroad of the Navaioes.
