A Letter from France. I; The following letter was received ,1 by Miss Lena Brad field, living a] few miles northeast of Petersburg, | owritten by Sargt. Van G. Mint % of |her cousin, Charles It. Brad field. who recently fell in battle in the |world war in Franco: I“Your letter of Nov. 11 received j. by Capt E. H. Bain of this company j* and turned over to me to answer j because your cousin, Charles R- j 1 Bradfield, was my personal friend. •; t We went through every battle side j by side ; we were together in Belgul,« in the Ypres front line from July j 15 to September 2; we were together Sunday, Sept.. 29, when onr division, the 30th, broke through the,s .ELindenburg line ; also at the battle of Buidgny,and atSc. Bemen, October 10, where both of ns werejt slightly wounded. We were sent jj out to the casualty clearing station j where we were kept, for four days, j* ] then sent back to our'company, which went back into action the i next day after we rejoined them.Before we went* in battle I recom- j jmended that ho be mude a corporal,which he was on October 15, hut henever knew about it; the promotion did not return from regimental headquarters until we were returned for the lust time. We started to advance on the morning of the 17th of October ? came in contact with the enemy about 3 :30 ; our artillery was putting down a heavy barrage, the enemy putting down a heavy counter barrage of gas and high ex plosives. We wero caught in the counter barrage of the enemy, kill ing or wounding 22 men out of tlO | that we bad with us at the time, j One of the boys told me that Cor. Bradfie’id was seriously wounded I, myself, found two stretcher bearers and had him sent, back to the dressing station ; from there he was sent to a base hospital in England. We did not hear any more from him until I seen in your home city jpaper that he had died. Wo have, never been officially notified of hisj death. But 1 assure you that lie j died the death of a man and one that our country should be proud Of. He was the bravest of thebrave, never flinched from danger or dutv He seemed like a brotherwto me, and his death was a very sad blow to me, as well as to his own dear people, for he was what we call in the urmyuay special buddy.” My sympathy goes out to you all in yonr bereavement and great loss.”
