I’ll try and give yon a short sketch of them, bat before telliog you of | our travels 1 m ist say som (thing tii 'te about i what occurred at Pimp Curtin. Our good friends at Yellow Creek were determined not to ho exceeded by tbo fcosf itable citizen3 of jWood berry, therefore they scut us a nuvv yaarspresent, in tire shape of a bountiful supply of edibles and luxuries; such as we know how to appreciate in Holliday times. Ou tbo second of Jan., wo left liurrhlurg at eight in the evening, en route for Higgerstown, wo arrived j there about 2 o’clock in t ic morning, were | quartered to the cars till daylight and ihcn m*rched into the Wo were detainedthere until noon, from some cause unknown t me, and then marched out about a hilf mile from town on the road leading to Hancock, and there halted again where we had considerable diffi.uity iu coasequence of som? of our “Iii-di’’ frieuds having ituhibrd too freely of that leverage oommaaiv known -*s “eyeopja-er” iD that section of country. However that i was all satUfactorily atrcageu and we pitched our tent* in a field close by, and with t ic frozen ground for u bed wo passed the night, not in sleeping tnuob, but iu shivering, iu the morning we struck tents, strappou on our knap sacks aud started on our march to II ineoek, distance 2(i miles. We unrobed in about 11 (/clock tbut night. Our boys stood the imrch much .better than could have been expected of uieu that i/*d been lying in camp so long doing nothiug. Wo were quartered for the balance of the night in Ike C thoiio church, the Priest did not like it very well. I suppose he considered it desecration but we were too tire i to leave. The next miming stiff and £ore as we were, we were unrobed out o*i u MR back of town, waiiing ausiously for the enemy to crlt;.ss the river (they gave ua our guns early on Sunday morning, they are the Belgium Rifled musket;) wo could see them on a hill cppisite in across th? river where they hid plaatei theirBattery. Our rifled cannon opened on them and they replied very briskly, but their shells utd not reach us as their gun» were not of long range or their gunners very indifferent thoughthey did throw soma very close to uq but itwas only occasionally. It was very different with them, for every shot our men made wo could see them s-ratter. Srver.il tim'd I fiiw sheti bursting right amongst them. About darkthe firing ceased and we were q lartercd m adwelling house, that bad been vacated by itsoccupants, who were iu fear that tbo rebelswould burn tbo town. Noarly all the citiz ns had moved out frobn the same cause. _ The next day (Monday,) our cannon pi»ycion them nearly all day, but they did not respond from | the fact that I suppose they found their guns i woul 1 cot reach us. I walked down along the I river and fired a few rounds at them, (:u »ro to try uiy new gun than anything else) out withno otuer iff rot than to uiuko thfcto iu-reaso ibe! distance between U'.
