Shorty Metzger, a former chief boatswain's mate who served 47 years with the Navy Metzger was a longtime resident of Annapolis and died in 1876. His widow, Stella, and members of his family attended the dedication From 1928 until his retirement in 1958, Metzger was a seamanship instructor m the Department of Seamanship and Navigation at the Naval Academy Nearly ail of the presenthigh-ranking officers were taught by him, according to Mrs Metzger From 1910 until 1828, he served m the active Navy and was stationed on 11 ships and at several ground stations He received World War I Victory Medal with Destroyer Clasp An anonymous weil-wisher purchased a chair in his honor at the Naval-Marine Corps Stadium during its construction He was a charter member of the Fleet Reserve Branch 24 in Annapolis He wrote “sea stories” that were regularly printed w local Navy magazines
