EOD Worker Decorated For Gallantry In BataanJoseph Hrupcho, Port Clinton, machinist at Erie Ordnance Depot, receives the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the Bataan Campaign in 1942. Catherine, and his n ot her, John. The latter two •re also employees of the depot.Hrupcho displayed courage and •ravery, according to the cita-«on. which was read at the pre-entation by Capt. A. Kermisch, ost Adjutant, during a tank aeon when one of the vehicles was lisabled and its crew' endangered.While two tanks attempted to cscuc the crew\ Sergeant Hrup-ho led an attack covering them nlil the men were released, he citation reads. This dcter-nined and courageous act dis-rgamzed the enemy and saved vital tank.Recalling the incident,. Hrup-ho said:It was a long time ago, and verything was happening pretty ast. Every one of us was doing what had to be done at the mo-lent without any thought of re-vard.”Hrupcho, a technical sergeant n Company C. 192nd Tank Bat-alion, was in service for four and a half years, and 42 months jt this time was spent as a prisoner of war of the Japanese. He is one of the few survivors of the Bataan March of Death and subsequent imprisonment.Hrupcho returned to his pcsi- [ tion at Erie Ordnance Depot following his discharge and has continued as a machinist in the depot’s recoil repair Shop since.Ice Fishing,While thousands or persons in Ohio and from many other states | have enjoyed the ancient sport ; of ice fishing, the factual side of the sport and industry, has never been told so well as has Dr. T. H. Langlois of Put-in-Bay in the current. Ohio Conservation Bulletin.Dr. Langlois is director of the Stone Institute of Hydobiology which is devoted to intensive studies of marine life in the Islands area of Lake Erie. He has found much romance in the sport of ice fishing, and amazing facts . connected with the tremendous industry of commercial ice fishing. The economic aspects of the i latter are far-reaching from Bowles’ Harbor, near Toledo, to Sandusky Bay.The sight of ardent anglers • crouching low over holes around Put-in-Bay and Bay Bridge is a familiar one to Ottawa countians. i and after two winters without icc and ice fishing, the islanders arc eagerly looking forward to the 1951 season. Dr. Langlois predicts that there will be plenty of ice and ice fishing this winter.His comments on ice fishing in general follow:Technique Pays OffIn the several decades which they have enjoyed of ice fishing the islanders have developed equipment and techniques of fishing which have paid off in results. There are more pounds of fish caught per man-hour of fishing by anglers around the islands through the ice than have been reported for any other sports fishery in the w’orld. The catch varies from day to day and from season to season, and with the skill of the fisherman, so that averages are difficult to state. Many blank days have been reported. but the peak catches have been made by certain expert islanders, and of these, Johnny Nissen of Put-in-Bay holds the record at present. On two occasions. he has caught 230 pounds of pickerel, which averaged one1
