It is Act-) ing Captain Euan Lucie-SmltA, of the , Itoyal Field Artillery, second son ofthe Chief, who received the MilitaryCross as “an immediate award in the field for gallantry.” Captain Lucie-Smith, with becoming modesty, says:“I really do not know what I got it ior, although the Colonel made quite a flattering speech about a small affair I had at the battery. But It was roally trivial, although I have the consolation of knowing that the two N. C. Ob and one gunner who helped me on that occasion have all been given the M. M. (Military Medal).” i It might be of interest to record that In September, 1914, Captain Lucie-Smith went to Flanders as a private in the H. A. C., but subsequently he obtained a commission in j the R. F. A. He has seen much service in Flanders, where he has been ever eince, and had already been wounded. Captain Lucie-Smith is naturally reticent as to where he won this singular honour, but it is presumed that be distinguished himself in the region round about Cam-lrai during the recent successful \‘‘push” by the British force*.The Chief Justice’s eldest son, Captain John Lucie-Smith, is au officer in the Dublin Fusiliers, having served with the Irish Brigade at Qal-lipoll, and is now on the General Headquarters Staff at Salonika. He | is a barristerat-law, and will be re- tl membered locally as having spent some little time in the Chambers ofan eminent King’s Counsel now numbered with the great majority. We beg to compliment both the Chief Justice and Capt Euan Lucie-Smith on the latter’s distinction in battle, and we are sure we but voice the wishes of friends of both when we express the hope that Captain Lucie-Smith may be the recipient of other and higher tokeus of bravery in the field.!I
