j Hancock, MJ. Jan. 6, 1862.Mb. Editor:—No doubt a communication from tbd “Woodberry Riflamoo” would bo of some interest to yoar roaders. By tbi9 time probably, you have beard tbe boom of th« cannon. Sioco tbe boys left home they have smelt powder. We havo been io a hot coo* test with tbe reeela, for tbe last throe days, till at last we have gained the victory. The 84th Pa. Regt, (Col. Murrays,) and a part ofan Illinois, Regt. while on picket duty ao-cross the Potomac, were attacked by the rebels numbering about from ten to eighteen thousand, and made our men retreat across the | river. Tbe euemy had ten piecce of artillery, we having only three. Yesterday the 110thI Regt. was formed in line of battle on the hill back of Hancock, and about 11 o’cloek they | opened fire on us. We received aome rein* forceinents, and then our artillery commenced firing upon them, and drove them completely j off the biilj but wc cannot tell what loss they sustained. This morning they came back to the hill, our ' guns firing all day at them, and again they j were driven back. Whilst the rebel? were j running, I noticed a shell burst amongst them, \ killing one.
