The rescuers became so cold in one instance, they built a fire to keep from freezing.Finally, after carrying the major approximately six miles, an Army helicopter was summoned and the dead flier was placed on the aircraft and transported to the Cumberland Airport.As one member of the rescue unit put it, “I could not have walked 300 yards more/’ .Members of the rescue party were: Harland * Upold, JosephDurst, Martin Tressler, Kenneth Resh, Thomas Durst, George Rex-road, Robert Wilt, Gary Finzel, and Ernest Brenneman, all of Garrett County.Mr. Upold was in charge of the rescue team and with a two-way radio was in contact with another rescue group coming into the area from the opposite direction.- Mr. Upold said, “This was an organized search under very difficult circumstanees.,,Others who assisted in the search were Don Newman, (ambulance owner), William Leasure, (ambulance attendant), Thomas Bender, Blaine Beachy, James Michaels, Robert Warnick, Dayton Broadwater, Cecil Broadwater and Hank Handwork.The rescuers entered the area late Tuesday evening and didn’t emerge until after daylight Wednesday morning.
