NORTHERN PEOPLEPurple Heart donated to local history collectionBY STEPHANIE BRZEZINSKIsb rzezin sk i@ rec or d -eag le. c omTRAVERSE CITY — Librarian Amy Barritt said they normally showcase pictures and other two-dimensional items, like manuscripts, in the Traverse Area District Library’s local history collection.But a Purple Heart, medal — and the story of the man who earned it — was recently added to the display.“It’s the first medal of service that we have in the collection,” Barritt said. “We’re very honored to have this as part, of ourcollection.”Alfred James Lensen was born in Kalkaska, but grew up in Traverse City. He joined the army in 1917 and was injured the next year on the French front. After an honorable discharge, he moved to Detroit, where he died in 1960.Lensen received a paper certificate in 1918 because the Purple Heart medal was not designed until the early 1930s, said Terri Shattuck, the national president of the LadiesSEE HEART PAGE 2ERecord-Eagle/J an -Michael StumpTerri Shattuck, the national president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, presented Pfc. Alfred James Lensen’s Purple Heart to the Traverse Area District Library’s local history collection. Local members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart also attended.
