Jackson received notice of thedeath of Major W. G. S. Before coming to Western he* . . *was commandant of the Orchard Lake Military Academy, Orchard Lake, Michigan. He was originally from Leavenworth, Kansas, and was descended from people long prominent inkmilitary activities.At Western 17 YearsMajor Lowe became commandant., * *at Western in 1901, when the enrollment was less than 100 cadets. Hejserved for 17 years until 1918 and was lai'gely responsible for building the corps up to 300 cadets and in establishing Western as one of the outstanding militai’y schools of the. •scountry.His career here covered the period between the Spanish-American Warand the first World War. During this*era of peace there was a tendency for the U. S. Army to fall below the1standards of European ai’mies. The influence of the old Indian fighters was still present, but people were shocked by the lack of discipline a-mong^ some of the. volunteer troops of the Spanish-American War. Major _i .Lowe believed that' a good way to build an efficient military force during peace time was through strong discipline backed by a large amount of close order drill. He was considered by many to be one of the foremost• . i *experts in close order drill in the entire country.Trained Eight GeneralsAt Western he taught this high type of basic military training, and he insisted on strict discipline bothin the barracks and on the drill field. *Every cadet corps undei* his supervision was noted for snappiness and orderliness. He himself was an erect, snappy, military figure, and he set an example for the corps that was4 almost Spartan.
