St. Joseph Sailor Gets Navy Medal For HeroismCAMP BRADFORD. Norfolk. Va. Jan. 15 (Special)—Stanley S. Za-jac, Motor Machinist’s Mate second class of 715 River street. St. Joseph, Mich . received congratulations from Captain C. F Erck, commanding officer of this amphibious training base, when he was p r e sented with the Navy and Marine Corps Medal at a ceremony here.Zajac received the doco ration for distinguishing himself by heroism while attached to the U. S. S. LST 351 during the amphibious assault on the West Coast of Italy. When over forty wounded men had been brought aboard the ship for medical treatment. Zajac immediately applied himself with great en-orgv and effectiveness toward assisting in saving their lives For a period of more than twenty hours, while exposed to enemy gunfire, air attack and threat of enemy mines, lie worked coolly and continuously aiding in the administration of plasma, dressing of wounds and caring for the needs of the wounded. His bravery, selflessness and determination contributed greatly toward minimizing the loss of life.”ZAJACThe citation was signed in the name of the president by H. K. Hewitt, Commander U. S. Naval forces, Northwest African Waters.Zajac has seen plenty of actionin the European theater, havingparticipated in the Invasions ofSicily. Salerno. Anzio and Southern France.The veteran of amphibious action now is receiving advanced training of Camp Bradford and soon will go aboard another LST (Landing Ship, Tank), which is the largest of the amphibious craft capable of making a beach landing.He wrs employed by the Firestone Rubber Company in Benton Harbor before entering the Navy.A graduate of St. Joseph's Catholic high school in 1933, Zajac has been in service nearly two years.
