Shirey, 31,Flies Craft intoULtoatFid?serethceti’nimfibi11mh,clodfthPdfivtl10l:X]Ammunition DumpJERSEY SHORE — Ralph Edward Shirey, 31, of Los Angeles, Calif., a native of Jersey Shore, and a former resident of Williamsport, was killed Wednesday when he flew a jet plane into an ammunition dump at the Los Alamitos Naval Reserve Center.He was a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve. During takeoff at 2:25 p.m. trouble developed in the plane near the naval weapons station at Seal Beach, Calif. Instead of ejecting himself from the plane as it was entering a nearby housing and freeway area, he decided to stick with it and crashed into the ammunition dump.In addition to being in the Naval Reserve, Shirey was a pilot for United Airlines, flying from Los Angeles to Boston. He was in Williamsport for Christmas and returned to California for a training mission with the reserve.He was the son of Oscar L., of Linden, and Geraldine Slavin Shirey, of Williamsport.He was born Aug. 6, 1936, in Jersey Shore.According to reports from California, he entered the Naval Air Force in November, 1955, 1and was promoted to command pilot in December, 1956.
