Will Organization of Iowa Guardsmen Surmount Ruling?Des Moines, Jan. 11.—Tho First Iowa infantry, 1,100 strong, will leave the service of Uncle Sam and go homo nort Monday.The 12 companies will he mustered out, paid their wages for the last month and a halt of their “bit and depart on three special trains for home stations where the populace will turn out in welcome.They go with the fate of their present organization in the balance. ... Commanding, offlcera'^ot the Iowa national guard are trying to keep the regiment Intact;-....-:• _Orders have come from Washington directing that the new onth of the federal defense act, which became effective after the soldiers were mustered into federal service last summer, must be submitted to the guardsmen. Otherwise they will remain merely as members of the organized militia of the state of Iowa’. Refusal to take the oath means the withdrawal of federal aid, according to Colonel Bartley, commander of theregiment And without federal aid, which is financial, the state militia could not be maintained. The men would therefore be mustered out of necessity.Thai Now Oath.The war department has ruled that the new oath must be submitted before the last day of the month following the month in which the guardsmen are mustered out of their present federal service. In the case of the First Iowa it would have to ho submitted by March 1.AdJU Gen. Guy E. Logan disputes tho ruling of tho war department. He declares the soldiers have already taken the oath of the new defense act and when mustered out of their I present federal service go automatically into the national guard under tno new defense system-He has taken the situation up with official Washington in an effort to Becare a reversal of the present order to administer the new oRth.It's now up to Washington.
