Donor gives Wheaton College a reminder of abolitionist pastBy Jac k Komperdalkith Herald Skiff W'nkrThere’s nothing overtly striking about the wooden, cylindrical apparel box Raymond and Lillian Weaver Smith purchased for their children’s alma mater, WheatonCollege.The outer design of the bandedbox has largely faded over time, and the interior is still lined with a jaundiced edition of an old Methodist newspaper called the True Wesleyan,wBut it’s that newspaper lining that school officials and the Smiths say ties the 150-year-old artifact to the school’s abolitionist past.“We simply don’t have a lot ofinformation or material that ties usto the early days of the institution,” said David Malone, the head of archives and special collections for Wheaton College. “This item helps make that connection.The editor of the 19th-century True Wesleyan, a New York-based abolitionist newspaper, was a Methodist minister named LuciusMatlack who served as the last president of the Illinois Institute before it was re-chartered in 1860 as Wheaton College.Prior to his tenure at the school, Matlack advocated for the abolition of slavery while lecturing in southern Illinois and on the East Coast,Set- PAST. n PAGE 9
