Thera baa occurred a greet many deaths in the i regiment; I will not attempt, bomerer, to i give a Hat of any but those of Company t U, which ia Capt. O'NeU's Perry county company. They are as follows:John Dotson, near Perryville, Oct. 6th. John Farmer, tfooisvilk, Oct. 6th.Lnke Altey, do do doJas. Lewellen, Nasbvilk, Dec. 6th..John Wheetley, do do 11th. When we sjtfrtod ont, Company G numbered ninety-seven men; two deserted near Perryvilk on* hearing the cannon roaring ia our advance, which I suppose was making muaieihai they didn’t like to dance to. The five deaths leaves ns ninety men; bet it pains me to have to tell yon that we can only muster forty effective men now, and soma of them wholly unable for duty. That places fifty of onrmen now in hoepitalfe being, scattered from Nashville to New Albany. What their conditions are, or whether any morn of them am dead, I know not, but ont of that many hospital cases, it is to be feared there is still more deaths; it is truly a lamentable thing, but tba same could be •aid of all the new regiments that eame out at tha lims we did and was brigaded along with old and annum! troops and forced off on one of the hardest and grandest marclws that any army ever did make on (his continent or any other.— But notwithstanding all the hardships and exposures, we stood op under it remarkably wall nntil the measles got among us, which has proved very fatal, and it seemed that there were aa unusual number of them had to have that, one of the most fatal diseases that the human family if subject to, and particularly when one is exposed aa soldiers are.— While writing, Capt. O'Neil rofnmedfrom town where he has been today visiting the sick, and reports the death of another ewe of our men who died the 9th of this month, from the effects of measles, it being a relapse case, to-wit: Robert Lawrence.Mr. Editor, it wonld be useless for me to attempt to lay down any programme as a basis for future operations at or near this place, as they don't allow a soldier even to tbink for himself. But notwithstanding, I shall take the responsibility to give it as my opinion that there is to be one of the hardest fought battles (or some of the nicest backing down) done out here about Murfreesboro in a few days that we have seen any account of lately. The rebels are in strong force at that place, and are reported as being at work day and night on their fortifications, making preparations for a desperate stand, but 1 am inclined to tbink that they will consider it a military necessity to ikedad-dk, that there is more strategy in running than consistency in fighting; that has been their programme for some time, 1 and it is to be presumed that they can | pU| on no other until they practice awhile j on a smdl scale, and they well know that Gen.
