a umucn ouy inLetter To EditorChristmas in the Gaza StripDecember 25, 1957Dear Sir,Over the Christmas holidays, from 1600 hrs 24 December to 0900 hrs 26 December, soliders of the UNEF will have a Christmas present from the 1st Indian Paratroop Battalion.The Indians who do not celebrate Christmas, have volunteered to man observation posts and checks posts on the Armistice Demarcation Line for the Danes, Swedes, Brazilians and Canadians, attending these troops to return to base camp to participate in the Christmas festivities.Last night was the first time in my life I have gone to midnight mass in a pouring rain. The temperature is up in the eighties during the day. It certainly doesn't seem like Christmas. If it is not raining the sand is blowing around.The Chaplains managed to assemble choirs for their respective churches. The choirs would not win first prize in a musical festival but they sure have plenty of volume. Some of the members couldn't find the right key at times but they were trying.Christmas dinner for the men was served by the officers and senior noo’s The men took advantage of the chance to giveorders to an officer. The Sgts of the Signal Sqn took over duties as switchboard operators wireless and signal office work to allow all the men to have dinner at the same time.The amateur radio stationlt;VE3BQL/SU1 operated by 56Signal Sqn has been kept busy p a s s ing Christmas greetings home for Canadians in Egypt There is a seven hour difference in time between here and Ontario. so all calls are made about; 3 am. I w as talking to my wifeand children on the 21st.
