HungnamOne of the most cheering reports coming from the recent evacuation of our troops from the Hungnam beachhead, is that which has to do with the actions of the 65th Infantry regiment. From all reports this regiment distinguished itself by action above and beyond the call of duty in the bitter fighting which preserved the beachhead and made possible the redeployment of the Tenth Corps which had been Isolated in Northeastern Korea. The men of the 65th Infantry regiment are United States Infantry men who have lived up to the high traditions of that fine service. They are worthy of all the fine things that have been said about that service. The only difference between this regiment and others is that they are native Puerto Ricans. iThis regiment did excellent service in World War II in North Africa and in Southern France. Prior to its part in the defense of the Hungnam perimeter it took part in. the drive which opened the route to the Chongjin reservoir area. This fine fighting record is in keeping with the record of other minority groups in our great American experiment. The eagerness with which they fight for the ideals incorporated in our Declaration of Independence and Constitution is thoroughly heartening. It is vivid and encouraging proof of the vitality of democracy. It is complete and drastic refutation of communistic lies about the attitude of the minority groups in our nation. So a salute to America’s fighting men—especially the 65th Infantry regiment.
