Jerome Hero of Amazing Yank Jungle Raid Wins StagJEROME, Jan. 6 — A Jerome-Kimberly youth who made the headlines last October as a participant in one of the most amazing adventures of the Pacific jungle warwill again be in the headlines—but this time he’ll play a very different role.Staff Sgt. Veni Miller, son of Glenn H, Miller, Jerome, has been selected as the ideal soldier to play a role In a San Francisco stage presentation.Far Behind LinesMiller was with an eight man scouting patrol which ventured far behind Jap lines In New Guinea, Armed only with a canteen, knife and six clubs, the patrol killed 33 of the enemy and then slipped through hundreds of angry Japa to safety.Now stationed in Oakland, Oalif., Sergeant Miller will start work in the stage production immediately, he wrote his father. He will commute to San Francisco for the stage role.Sergeant Miller was overseas 58 months. He entered service five years ago last Nocember, was at first in Honolulu when the war was declared and served as an instructor in the Hawaiian Islands.He belonged to the famed reconnaissance unit of Lieut. Gen. Walter Krueger's sixth army, which ambushed parties of Japanese and slewthem to the last man.Losing their weapons In the sea these men, who were called a miniature army of Alamo scouts, disposed of other ?ap soldiers by strangulation and with a knife. One of Miller’s group killed a nip with a cocoanut.Headliner Again* * •While Japs SleptThey boldly walked the single street of a native jungle while the Japs slept in huts around them,killed two guards and faded Into the jungle. The action occurred during the mopping-up of nearly 4,000 Japs in the Hollandia area of Dutch New Guinea.The men ambushed and killed the enemy and escaped to await their PT boat .which failed to show up the night after the first foray. Only half the party was able to ride the rubber boat which they had, hidden.The boat, however, was able to make it to the PT and two of them returned to pick up the other men waiting on shore. After being capsized in the ocean en route 4o the PT, they clung to the wreckage of the boat which had to battle the angry waves, but they finally made It to safety.S/SGT.
