Letters-No learning from historyThe Chronide-Telegram:It was the fail of 1939. Hitler had just marched his hordes into Poland.1 remember my first sight of the havoc that was to be — a huge, blown-up newspaper photograph of a beautiful Polish farm girl lying dead in a field, victim of Hitler's first air strike. I thought, “what could this defenseless girl do against Hitler? What could Poland do against Hitler?”Russia also attacked Poland, and England and France marched to defend Poland. And World War II began.End of WW2; Germany defeated. Three grinning leaders, Stalin (how did he get in there?), Roosevelt and Churchill met at Yalta to settle terms of peace and divide up the world their way. And what did they do? They gave Poland to Russia.I burned then, and I burn now when I think of it, because today Poland is still being crucified. For whose sins is she suffering?Then I reflect. All this happened 40years ago. It is only real to us ancients who were adult then. To most people it is a page from a history book. It never really happened. Only those who lived through it can understand the horror of it. And we are too old to matter.The men who perpetrated that ghastly deed are dead now, and what does their lust for power avail them now?It is said that those who will not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The ones who wield power today are just as greedy, just as heartless. They too will bite the dust in the not too distant future — only this time, they may take all of us with them.Events of today may not be translated into history books, because there will be no history; nobody to read the books which will not be written.We have forgotten that he who sups with the devil needs a long spoon.Katie Peters Elyria
