Given Up As DeadJohn SpongbergWrites from GermanyCity Mail Carrier Harry Spong-berg was joyously surprised last week when he received a postal card from his son, John Spong-berg, apparently written from a prison camp in Germany. Not having heard from John for eight or ten months, Harry had given his son up for dead, John was in a commando squad that was the first to land in. the invasion of North Africa in November 1B42. He was later captured by the’ Italians and wrote his father from, a prison camp in Italy. When Itaiy surrendered last July and the prisoners were supposed to be released, not a word came from John and finally his father could not escape the conclusion that he was dead. The card which arrived here last week was written from “Kriegsgefangenlag^-,Germany,” supposedly a prison camp, and read:.“Dear Dad:-I. am' feeling jHello'’ THres ‘ • and* all; Happy• birthday dad.;. Best' wishes ' , for a: Merry Christmas and a• happy 1944. As ever, John Spongb.erg.” . •* .Gf course as this was written five months ago and nothing has come :£rom John since, it is not-Completely satisfying but it would seem that when John was released- from the Italian prison camp he was later captured by the Germans and has been in the German camp since.
