He was employed for several years at the Busy Bee Supermarket, 112 Vine St. NW, before being inducted into the Army on June 30, 1965.Completing basic training at Ft. Polk, La., the soldier was assigned to the 1st Calvary Division at Ft. Banning' until being ordered to Viet Nam last December.His mother, two brothers and five sisters last heard from the soldier last Tuesday when they received a two-page scribbled letter, which redd in part:“Life here is rough and the bad thing about it is that you don’t know what you are doing or where you are going. ..“But I know you are praying for me.. . Don’t worry because what is going to happen is go-ii^g to any way.r'Mother, we are going to a place called 'Hdppy Valley' and the stuff is due to hit the fan tomorrow with the biggest battle of this war. Even bigger than the one in Plie Mei, where all those people were killed.^So mom if you don’t hear irom me any more, remember that it was meant to be. We have 20 days in the valley.” Paul Roberts, co-owner of the Busy Bee Super-market, where Pfc. Nicholas began working when he was still in school, had nothing but praise for his former employe.Ho was ©no of tho best boys I'vo ovor had to work for mo/' Roborts said. I'vo novor hatod anything as bad in my lifo, ho added about loarning of the soldior's doath. ’Roberts added that Pfc. Nicholas was honest, dedicated and “quick to learn.” Other coworkers of the soldier agreed with Roberts.The serviceman’s body will be returned to Decatur within a few days for military funeral services.Survivors include five sisters.
