#'Maybe I subbed too soon'—GuintaBy ROGER NEGIN C-T Sports WriterElyria Catholic wanted to call off the game with six minutes left, but Brook-side wouldn’t holler ‘'uncle”.As a result the Panthers had to settle for a ragged 70-58 victory over the Cardinals instead of the impressive rout it had in hand.And Elyria Catholic Coach Bob Guinta was second-guessing himself for goingto his bench with six minutes left and his team in front 60-35.“Maybe I subbed too soon,” he said. “1 thought our bench could keep them at bay. When you take the first group out, it’s hard to ask them to go back and regain the momentum.“They started ratting (a scramble type press) us late,” he said. “We became complacent and they took advantage of it. Brookside had nothing to lose; they just eame after us.”BROOKSIDE outscored the Panthers, 25-11, in the fourth quarter with EC helping out with 14 turnovers and seven missed free throws (four on the first of one-and-ones).But until then, it was hard to fault the Panthers’ play.“For the first three quarters we played pretty well—better than we have for a long time,” said Guinta whose team closed the season with five losses in seven games. “I thought we played well early. We were hitting the boards andhitting the open man. I thought we ran well and penetrated their zone,“Kevin Ziegman had a good game and Kevin Calhoun had one of his best games. Ken Thomas rebounded well. It’s good to get that first tournament win; there are a lot of upsets in first tournament games.”The size factor hurt Brookside and Cardinal coach Len Volbert admitted it.“We just don’t have that big kid,” he said. “They went to the boards in the first half and we didn’t. They got the ball off the boards and that hurt us.“We could have rolled over and got beat by 50 points, though, and we didn’t. That’s been the trademark of these kids all year. We got beat by a team that came to play, but we never quit. We gave it our best shot and, if the ball had bounced our way a few more times in the fourth quarter, it would have been an even better game.“I THOUGHT we could beat them. They’ve been up and down and have been struggling, but we stood around for 2 Vz quarters.”Now it’s another match with crosstown rival Elyria West for Guinta’s Panthers who have taken two of the first three.“Four times is too many to play a team, said Guinta. “We’ll be ready and I’m sure they will be too. The teams are evenly matched. They’re a little bigger /than we are, but we can play with them''on the boards. (C-T)FROM A-7and the other coaches scouting the game are picking up their coats at the hospitality room.DESPITE A FLURRY of fouls on EC in the third period, the margin continues toing honors with 23 points on a 10 of 15 shooting night, while Calhoun had 14, Zieg-man 13, and Byam 10. Wright, who would have had 23 had they been using the three-point field goal, topped the Cards with 18, while Carlsen added 13.EC won the board battle, 36-32, but that was due to the first quarter wrecking crew.Brookside finished its season with a 4-15 record. Elyria Catholic will take an 11-7 mark against Elyria West.Play it again, boys.
