★ Live ArtilleryContinued From Page fcenter. After describing the device to the Army experts, he learned that there was a “very good possibility” it is “armed.”The bomb experts told the chief it would be wise to remove the shell from the borough building and hide it overnight in an isolated location. 'The Army bomb experts told Chief Richthat if it was a “live one” it could causestructural damage if confined inside a building. They said from the discription given over the telephone there was a very great possibility it is part of a 105 mm Howitzer shell or a 90 mm tank artillery shell. Not taking any chances, Mayor Frederick Eberharter, Council President William Connors, Chief Rich, State Trooper David Coughenour of Scottdale (who was off duty at the time) and this writer gently removed the shell to an undisclosed location. The U.S. Army bomb experts told Chief Rich they would come into Scottdale Friday morning and either disarm it or take it back to Irwin for disposal.Stoner, his wife and their two children have been living in the KKKyear-old structure for the past two weeks. It isn’t known how long the shell was hidden under the porch of the home, but by its appearance it could have been years.Stoner also said there is more debris under the porch. It was just before dark when the shell was found. Stoner didn’t want to “root around” under the porch in the dark. He said there could be more such devices there.Chief Rich said today if the shell proves to be loaded, he would ask the Army experts to check the Stoner residence for any more shells.Stoner glanced at his wife and said, “What do you think about this? You have been sitting on a real live bomb for the past two weeks and didn’t know it.”
