Wisnges in the Name Niagara.[Chicago Times.]The name Niagara has passed through many orthographical changes in the last 2U0 years. J n 1687 it was written Onia-goragh. In 1686 Gov. Bongan appeared uncertain about it and spelled it Obni-agero, Onyagara, and Onyagro. TheFrench in 1688 to 1709 -wrote it Nia-’ gnro, Onyagare, Onyagra, and Oney-gra. Philip Livingston wrote in 1720 to 1730 Oetjagra, Jagera, and Yagerah; and Schuyler and Livingston, commissioners of Indian affairs, wrote it in 1720 Onjayerae, Gcliiagara, etc. In 1721 it was written On j agora, Oniagara and, accidentally, probably, Niagara; as at present. Lieut. Lindsay wrote it Niagara in 1751. Bo did Capt. 3e Lan-' cey (son of Gov. Be Laneey), who was an officer in the English army that captured Fort Niagara from the . French in: 1759, These pioneers may, however, be excused in view of'the fact—as will be attested by postmasters—that some letter-writers of to-day seem quite 3 undecided about the orthography of this world-wide familiar name.
