Phoenix. Wed., Feb. 15, 1967O * The Arizona Republic 9Moraga Knows LogisticsTempean Timed LBJ Malaysia Visit to SecondBy ROBERT J. SARTIPeter Moraga had to think ahead for a family visit to the West Coast today, but his logistical problems were minor compared to those for a trip he helped plan last year.“We're leaving nice and early tomorrow morning, said Moraga yesterday. The last time we left later and we got tied up in the. rush-hour freeway traffic around Los Angeles.Moraga had more than just traffic to worry about last Oct. 30-31 when he was advance man in Malaysia for President Johnson's Far Eastern lour. The former Tempe resident's specific job was to smooth Uie way for the army of newsmen who were to accompany Johnson.A U.S. Information Agency officer stationed in Mexico City, Moraga went to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capitol, three weeks early to begin preparations. He found on arriving that there was a decided shortage of hotel rooms and modem communications equipment, notably telephones. The Malaysians were just marvelous people, said Moraga, a graduate of Tempe Union High School and of the University of Arizona. They never faced anything that big before, but the government stepped in and got us the hotel rooms for the two days we were going to need them.Even with government help, Moraga said, it took every minute of the three weeks to prepare for Johnson’s visit. Every detail had to be worked out in advance, down to how many seconds it would take for each handshake.DESPITE all the contingencies, everything went according to plan, he said. The Malaysians had no idea where to begin but when we got into it everything just started falling into place. he added. We had one very tired group of newsmen on our hands and so we tried to make everything as easy for them as possible. Why, I don’t think we lost a single piece of luggage ... it was a smooth operation.MORAGA was picked to do the advance work by Bill Moyers, the then presidential press secretary. Moraga had impressed Moyers during Johnson's visit to Mexico last April.A former program director for Phoenix radio station KIFN, Moraga went to work for the USIA's Voice of America in Washington nine years ago. He went to Mexico City 4'A years ago as a radio and television officer and was subsequently promoted to assistant embassy information officer.Moraga and his wife, the former Gloria Flores of Mesa, and their five children returned to Arizona last month to visit friends and relatives before his next assignment.LIFE INSURANCEISSUED BY MAILENTER AT AGE 21 TO 80 KEEP IT FOR LIFEMAIL THIS ADNO OBLIGATIONAPPLICATION MAILED TO YOUNAME...................................AOOXSS................................CITY....................................mu..................iip.............n** •* ••NTH..........................GREAT LAKES INSURANCE COMPANY ELGIN, ILL., MHO, OEPT.
