The old man about this time discovered a oeuple of officers ofthe fourth Kentucky Cavalry, I believe, a shortdistance off, whom he called to his aid. The mem were immediately marched Into camp, with the hog, and were placed in confinement till the matter could be reported tp the headquarters of this regiment, when, upon the written order of CaptainBrown, of Company A, the men were delivered up. But this did not appear to satisfy Calhoun, whodetermined to seek the first opportunity for revenge. On the morning of the 23d, as near as I am able to ascertain, a soldier went to Mr. Sutherland’s dwelling, and sent a servant into the house to request him to come out and receive pay for a heifer whioh he alleged some of the hoys had killed the evening before, stating that the colonel bad resorted to that mode of adjustment rather than have any of Mb men punished. The soldier then Went away, and returned in the course of a couple ,lt;Sf hours afterward, and, seeing Mr. Sutherland working in his garden, he sought an interview with him, requesting him to go with him into a retired place in the direction of the camp.The old gentleman was not seen during the whole. m • _ .
