Navy Petty Officer FirstClass William T (Billy) Townsend of New Orleans, has been selected as the Eighth Naval District Sailor of theMonth.Townsend, a sonartechnician, was selected from among the Navy men and women on the Eighth Naval District staff, Fleet Introduction Team, Coastal River Division 22. NavalSupport Activity and othercommands stationed in New Orleans.As Sailor of the Month, Townsend will receive special considerations during his tenure in addition to being honored by the Commandant, Rear Admiral Robert E KieraThe son of Mr and MrsWesley M. Townsend of Fort Stockton, Townsend joints! the Navy June 7, 1965.His service has included duty aboard repairships, anddestroyers in addition to his present assignment with the Fleet Introduction Team atAvondale.As a sonar technician with the FIT team, Townsend coordinates the training for crewmen assigned to ‘ Knox-class destroyer escorts being readied for delivery to the fleetHis qualifications include proficiency in both bow mounted and variable depth sonar submarine detectionsystems.Stationed m New Orleans for two and a half years, Townsend says, “I enjoy being stationed here, and I’m particularly fond of what isdescribed as ‘Cajun humor ” Married to the former Sylvia Hearn, daughter of Mr and Mrs. E R Hearn of FortStockton, Petty Officer Townsend attends Delgado Junior College in New Orleans during off duty hours.SAILOR OF MONTH — Petty Ofticer First Class William T. (Billy) Townsend (iett) was chosen ''Sailor of the Month'' for February for the Eighth Naval District of the US Navy.
