Pfc. Edward C. Duffy Received Citation For Heroic AchievementThe Shopper received word today that Pfc. Edward C. Duffy, son of Mrs. Mary Duffy, of 722 Oakland Ave., Iowa City, has received the Bronze Star Medal for excellent service. Citation follows:EDWARD C. DUFFY, 37424053, Private, Company B, 111th Medical Battalion, for heroic achievement in combat on 27 arjd 28 September 1944 in France. When the 3d Battalion, 142d Infantry Regiment, moved into position in preparation for an attack, the enemy shelled the area with heavy artillery concentrations from the afternoon of 27 September until the following morning. The two litter squads of the battalion suffered five casualties, and most of the work of caring for the many wounded fen upon Private Duffy and one companion. They worked continuously. w'th-out rest, moving about the shell-torn 1 terrain to the three infantry companies going wherever the emergency was greatest. On numerous occasions they voluntarily left places of shelter to act as company aid men and littei bearers, fearlessly exposing them selves to the incessant shellfire until all the casualties had been removedfrom the battlefield to the aid station. During the morning of 28 bep tcmber, when fresh Utter squads arrived, Private Duffy and his companion voluntarily aided in excavat-! ing the wounded over one mile of hillv muddy, exposed terrain to a forward Ambulance post.
