GALL NATIONALGUARD MONDAYWill Spend Several Days AtLocal ArmoryI Iowa's oldest and most famed•regiment, the 168th Infantry, enters the federal service once more Mon-4! day. This time the regiment is to undergo a year's training at Camp Claiborne, La. The organization, which includes headquarters company and the headquarters of the Third battalion at Jefferson, is to | remain in Iowa for from 10 to 20 days before entraining for the south. During this period those who can return to their homes easily will be permitted to do so each night. During the days, however, the guardsmen will be busy doing the army’s toughest job—cleaning guns and working on equipment. They also will be given shots” to harden themselves against disease.The headquarters company of Jefferson has an allotted strength of 88 men and, according to a report issued recently by Col. Folsom Everest, regimental commander, the unit now lias 83 men. Colonel Everest said the company would accept recruits until Monday and • | that lie expected it to have its full ; | strength by that time. He added that he was very pleased by the showing the company had made in filling up its ranks.Capt. Ira Potter of Audubon Is commander of the headquarters unit while a Jefferson resident, Lt. Col. Orville W. Harris, is commander of the 168th’s Third battalion. A part of the famous Eainbow Division” in the World war, the 168th now is part of the 34th division which also includes most of Iowa's other guard organizations.Camp Claiborne, where the 34th division is to be stationed, is 16 miles south of Alexandria, La. The camp already houses 800 regular army troops and 500 volunteers under the selective service law.The camp is being erected at a cost estimated at 12 million dollars. Three wells and one elevated storage tank of 250,000-gallon capacity are in operation with six more wella and two more storage tanks are nearing completion. The water distribution system consists of approximately 38 miles of water mains, assuring the Iowa guardsmen an adequate supply at all times.Tents in the camp will be winterized” with floors and sidewalls. It Is understood that they are elevated about the ground, a step taken to increase their capacity for retaining heat.
