John Vale was born in Lambeth, Lon* i don, England, Aug. 9, 1836. At the ago of 1C he came to America, going at once to LeClaire, Iowa. He remained for some time in I^Claire and then left for Minnesota, where he engaged in farming until the outbreak of the civil war. He enlisten in Company H, 2d Minnesota infantry and for fourj years he served his country. In 1898, many years afterwards, the congress of the United States recognized his services by voting him a btenze medal ‘ for “gallantry and bravery in action,” ( one of the very few medals ever voted a private soldier by congress and probably the only one in Iowa. He also in |late life enjoyed a total disability pen*!sion by special act of congress. After the war was over Mr. Vale entered j the postoffice under Edward Russell as mailing clerk and held the position for 26 years. Mr. Vale was twice married. In 1881 he was united in marriage to .Miss Mary Middleton, sister of the late Dr. W. I). Middleton, whose {death occurred some IS months later. ; | In 1888 he married Miss Maggie .1.• Peters.
