40th Battles Reds in. IcyTOKYO, Feb. 4 (Monday) — (EE).' Infantrymen of th* U, S. 40th Division fought the Eighth Army’s heaviest action Sunday in Koreaa$ temperatures dropped to 15 degrees below lero on the Korean front, it was announced today.The Eighth Army said action along the 155-mile battlelirve waa limited to ptrpl contact*, with one from the 40th Division fighting, an hour-long engagement against two Communist squads east of Kumiong on the central front.The Allied and Red troops met at 5:15 a. m,, and slugged it out until the troops of the former California National Guard division withdrew under heavy fire and called in.artillery and mortar fire to blast the enemy.The 40th then moved back to the attack, again ran into heavy fire and at 6:20 a. m. was ordered to break off the engagement.Eight Long BeaeV men are known to be membefB ol the division. Scott, Long Beach resident and Naples school principal, ran into Brig. Gen. Homer Eaton, a Los Angeles school vice principal, in Korea the other day.Each thought the other was still back in the Los Angeles area teaching school.
