rum By Our ReadersFORUM RULESLetters express opinions of contributors, with which The Tribune may or may not agree.Writers must sign true names and addresses in ink, but letters will be carried over assumed names if requested.Poetry will not be used. Letters may be rejected if they:(1) Exceed 200 words; (2) discuss religious or racial matters in a sectarian way; (3) carry partisan political comment or advertising; (4) make personal aspersions, or (5) contain libelous matter, obvious misstatements of fact, or statements not in accord with fair play and good taste.they’re idle gossipers . . lt;bearers “ill wind” that blows noone good. I say to those in agreement: Let’s flood the telephone company with letters of protest until thesfe “cancers of society” — these . long-winded telephone gossipers—talk themselves out of the wonderful convenience and necessity of a telephone,' Mel Standage.Bonus Like DefeatEditor, Tribune: Why not a veterans’ bonus indeed! I, like Mr. Owens, am a veteran of the last world conflict. I gave my services to my country in good faith, and in doing so lost one of my most cherished possessions. That of good health.I, like Mr.- Owens, have experienced some difficulty in paying off old debts and .“making ends meet.” But I-fail to see the logic to the argument that the issuance to veterans of bonuses will alleviate any financial stress caused by a deficiency of current monthly income.I would prefer to malce an analysis of myself and environment in an attempt to arrive at some solution to my current financial deficit on my own, rather than have the state of Utah give me a bonus payment. To accept a bonus under such conditions would be, to me, like admitting defeat. If any bonus should be paid, I believe that it should be as a result of a desire of the people of this state to compensate the veteran' for the inconvenience ofhis having* to break up his home, to endure the hardships of army living and the hardships of overseas duties.Gerald C. Stromberg. For JusticeEditor, Tribune: In reading the Forum, I noticed a couple of articles that are so ignorant of facts about the Hiram BeBee case that I cannot refrain from commenting on the subject. In the first place, according to The Tribune, BeBee is an exalumnus of San Quentin penitentiary, a place where people are put for having committed a very grave offense against the law and society. BeBee was disturbing the peace when he was escorted from the “tavern.” BeBee was breaking the law while “carrying concealed weapons”; BeBee earned, according to law, the death sentence when he committed a premeditated cold-blooded murder, proof of which is in his own statements that: There is no remorse. I have no regrets and if occasion arose, I would do it all over again. It is surely unfortunate that we always have a few “sob sisters” and “sob brothers” to 9 bring the “flowers.”Judge Latimer and associates, who stood out for justice, are to be highly commended., G. W. Foster Cedar City, Utah.Tobacco for GermanyEditor, Tribune: I would like to be enlightened. Under a Washington date line of Jan. 17, I read, “Heavy tobacco purchases for western Germany accounted for more than half of $11,534,000 in new Marshall Plan aid grants approved Monday by the Economic Cooperation administration.” Gullible as we are and not too well informed, we know we pay for this so called Marshall Plan at least twice — taxation and higher prices. We have even accepted it as a part of the price of our victory. The question is, “What ai-e these huge tobacco purchases doing for the people of Germany?” Could it be that it is now a substitute for milk? Or are we spending ourselves into poverty and neglecting our own needy and deserving to get , these poor tobacco interests ontheir feet?Mrs, D. T. McDonald
