GOLDBERGBAMBERG, Germany (Special) — The 3rd Bn, 35th Armor, and the 1st Bn, 54th Inf, have been given awards signifying the 4th Armd Div’s highest achievements in the past year’s tank gunnery and mechanized infantry testing.Maj. Gen. William W. Cobb, 4th Armd CG, presented the division tank gunnery award to the 3rd Bn and the Quinn Infantry Proficiency Award to the 1st Bn.Accepting the award for the 3rd was its GOV Lt. Col. Melville B. Weir. Lt. Col. Edward B. Benedit received the Quinn citation on behalf of his 1st Bn. \ The 3rd Bn received the tank gunnery trophy for the second consecutive year. The award is presented annually to the armor battalion that qualifies the greatest proportion of, its tank crews during Tank, Crew Qualification Course testing at Grafenwoehr.Best in Division The battalion’s A Co was cited as the high tank company in the division. Four of its qualifying crews were among the top five crews in the battalion, placing first, second, third and fifth. The 1st Bn distinguished itself by qualifying all of its eligible squads during the Mechanized Infantry Squad Proficiency testing in 1970.At the same ceremony, Cobb presented individual awards to six members of the battalion — S.Sgt. Jack Payton, C Co, the Air Medal and Bronze Star; 1st Sgt. George J. Dlckleman, A Co, Third Oak Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star; Sgt. Boyd R. Ti-manus II, C Co, Bronze Star; Pfc. Carlton L. Hamilton, B Co, Purple Heart; Spec. 4 Barry D. Burke, A Co, Army Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, and Capt. James S. Bell, CO of C Co, Vietnamese Armed Forces Honor Medal.
