Keith Greiner. 21, and the rest of the 4th Ba-tallion, 9th Infantry Manchu reconnaissance platoon left their camp near Cu Chi, South Vietnam, on patrol.During the patrol, machine gunner Greiner shot and wounded a 12-year-old boy.As they had mmed through their area of exploration. Pfc. Greiner had heard a noise, thought to himself “How many men have waited too long to fire and have been killed? '’and had fired into the night.Two women had appeared afterwards, carrying the wounded boy on down the road. The boy recovered- Greiner could think of only one thing: he had probably shot the boy needlessly because he had acted too fast.Last month “Army Reporter” carried a feature story' on Greiner's “Crucial Decision,” concluding with:“It was found that the boy was a scout lor the VC (Viet Cong) and was sent forward to to locate the recon's position. It was only after Pfc. Greiner read this report that he knew his decision had been t h e r i g h t one after a 11. He had possibly saved the patrol from attack, and prevented injury to the men of his platoon.”Pfc. Keith Greiner is the husband of Mrs. Martha Greiner of Pinkerton lane, and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Greiner of 812 Federal avenue. He is a 1964 graduate of Zanesville High School and entered the Army in January 1966.
