The lights were shaded In red and lighted candles shed a soft, pretty glow over the scene. A .Christmas tree was in the living-Iroom.Music was furnished by a colored ^orchestra. Will Alexander, who lives near Stony Point, and Mr. M. H. Suttonwere married in the parlors of the Guilford hotel at Greensboro Thursday evening. Rev. J. Vincent Knight performed the ceremony. The bride, who received her education at the Normal college at Greensboro, is an exceptionally bright young woman.A Greensboro paper carried this notice of the marriage: “A remarkable coincident occurred in the parlors of the Guilford hotel between 8 and 8.30 o’clock Thursday evening, when, without pre-arrangement, two marriages took place within 30 minutes, both ceremonies being performed by the same minister, Rev. J. Vincent Knight, pastor of the Christian Church. The two contracting couples were unknown to one another prior to* their romantic meeting at the same ^ime-and-neither knew of- the other’s-plans.“The fi rst wedding took place at 8 o’clock, when Miss Anna F. Smith,of Cool Spring township, received a cablegram, announcing the sad news that his son, Private Fred. Jones Smith, Co. 13, 165th Infantry, Amcr-1 ican Expeditionary Forces, was killed in action October 15.His mother had received a letter from him dated October 4, in which ho says: “I have had one big and grand experience in a real drive on the Germans, . and I really enjoyed(1tIcevery bit of it. I did not get hurt in any way, and came out o. k, And ifI never am permitted to be in another, I will always bo glad I was in thisone.1tEleven days later, he met his fate, though the family were not officially notified until Christmas day.The parents have also received a letter from Francis P. Duffy, chaplain of the 165th Infantry, in which he expressed deep regret, and sympathy for the family in their deep bereave* ment.In part, he wrote: “It will bo a source of help to you, to know that he died a noble death, gallantly rushing forward towards the enemy. His life was not spent in vain, his bravery helped us win the victory., lIJs death was sudden, but not unprepared for he had steadfastly faced it since first he entered the service. He had made his peace with God, aftd Went to his death with a noble, and gallant spirit. He was buried where he fell— his fittest resting pfecor’j, •Fred Jones Smith was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius W. Smith, of Cool Spring township. He was born July 3, 1893, being a little over 25 years of age. On May 28th, 1918, he entered the service, being sent first, to Camp Jackson S. C., and later transferal to Camp Sevier, S. C. After six weeks in camp he sailed for France. He gave his young life in defense of his country, and his flag.He is survived by his parents, one sister, Mrs. * A.*ugusta Smith-Barrier, of Drexel, Burke county, two brothers, Messrs. T. Vance Smith, of Hopewell, Va., and George C. Smith, of this county, also three half brothers— Messrs. E. E. Reid, Norwood, Colo.; John F. Reid, Kendrick, Idaho; James N. Smith Lor rain, Va.; five half-sisters—-Mrs. J. S. Keller, Harmony; Mrs. J. N. Tuttorrow, Greensboro; Mrs. Quincy Mundy, Keysvillc, Va.; Mrs. Kate R. Kelly, Jgliactta, Idaho; and Miss Rebecca A. Reid, Jacksboro, Tenn.The deceased was a faithful . and consistent member of New Hope Baptist church near his home, having joined this church at the age of tv/clve years.
