Wiram, a native of Terre Haute, and son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Wiram, 615 S. Chicago Ave., Brazil, was honored recently on board theDock Landing Ship U.S.S. Tortuga in San Diego. Calif., at a ceremony marking his promotion to the rank of Commander,U.S. Navy.During that tour, the ship played an active part in landings of Da Nang, Viet Nam, site of the strategic American air base. Commander Wiram received the Viet Nam Service Medal for his role in the operations. Immediately after the ship’s return from Viet Nam. it sailed westward once again to transport U.S. Marine Corps personnel and material to Okinawa. The ship returned to its home berth in San Diego in October.Commander Wiram is the Executive Officer of Tortuga. Hereported to the ship in December 1964. Last spring Tortuga participated in Exercise SilverHe entered the Navy as a commissioned-officer the same year. He was formerly a teacher at McCulloch School in FortWayne.
