Bomber Still HereThe .big B-17 E Flying Fortress which came to rest early in. the morniag of December 15 on the • Dick Van. Ss farm northeast of Orange City, is still a guest of the county. It is closely guarded, as it should be, for it is one of the latest model bombers being 1-produced in .the U. S. and it is \ filled with costly and delicate in j strumerats. . All sorts of stories are being told but it. is known thal practice bombs were. rexnov ed from the plane and the landing wheels lowered with the help ! of several • huge crash trucks. • Four new propellers .have been i installed and it is said that the plane will be' flotvn. from its rest mg place. Mechanics have gone over the motors and the machine jbas been turned under its own | power to face east. |These bombers- are so sturdily! ■built that the crash landing in rough ground caused but little [damage, everything considered. It is’ said that a mat runway Vill be laad down, the wheel brakes set and the motors pushed up to a high point and then the brakes released with the bomber fly ing quickly into the air. This system has been used before to take a heavy plane out of a small 1 space, - |i Citizens, have been kept back} '(from the repair work (as is nec ]essary) and the guarus have been ' camping out ior ten days,,| oh their own. They seem to be I still in good health regardless of the. rigors of winter, a sleet storm and cold.
