DAVIS TO BE TRIEDLetter To Official* Lead* To Court-Martial Of Officer.fFrom The Srv Bureau.]Washington, Dec. 20. — Orders w^r* signed by Acting Secretary of the Navy W in throp today for the court-martial of I Major Henry Farrlugton Davis, of the Marino Corps, on charges growing out of an ‘ alleged impertinent letter written to the j Navy Department by Major Davis some time ag«» in connection with his application ' to be returned from Guam to duty in the United States.Major Davis was surprised by the prompt-aetion of the department, in ordering him to the United States “for temporary duty” upon receiving his letter. He was directed to proceed by the first available steamer; for San Francisco and thence to the ma- j( rino barracks at the Philadelphia Navy | Yard.' Major Davis lias reported his arrival at San Francisco and is now on his way across | the continent, presumably unaware that he is being rushed borne merely to face a court-martial. The detail for the court, of which Rear-Admiral Samuel P. Comly,' uow on duty at the Philadelphia yard, probably w ill be president, will be completed I tomorrow and the trial will begin early in January.Major Davis was appointed to the Marine Corps from the District of Columbia in April, 1801), and was promoted to major j in May, 1008. Ills last cruise ended in July of that year, and in May, 1009, he was aent to Guam to command the marine bairacks at that station. Friends of Major Davis argue that if his letter to the department was objectionable it might have been dueto a mental condition Incident to service atGuam. Accordingly, they will eudeavor to have him brought before a board of mental survey, looking to his retirement.
