Gen, Franklin, fell back to Vermillionvillc, and thence to tliis place. - ,Now Iberia, the present whereabouts ofour iarmy, is the capital town of St. Mar.'s Parish, contains a population of l,2l»0, and is Jsi United on the Bayou Tcasch, which is nav-Iigitblc to this point. The eouniry adjacent thereto is Prairie, wiih an occasional belt of timber. The New Orleans, Opelousas and Great Western Railroad, which is graded to Opelousas, aiiddn operation to Brash oar City, runs through the.town. • The inhabitants are French and mongrel, ignorant, selfish hud.arrogant-fit snbjeess for a cursed Rebellion.Franklin entered the :place on ..the 17th inst., closely followed ‘ by a mocely force of Texan and Louisiana .soldiery, which were bold enough to penetrate our lines und ‘'gobble” two waggons mid four men of the 47thIndiana, before we had got tcuie ;‘pitched/» Their number was small:, however, and the rebs vmnonsed with their plunder on thedouble-quick. *' j 4’his mornitig, the 29th Wisconsin, together with some Indiana Infantry and Cavalry, were in a line at four o'closk, and moved si. lently out of camp. They returned at ten o'clock with 112 prisoners—fourteen of whotu wore commissioned officers—belonging to the 7th Texas mounted volunteers, commanded by the notorious Ex-California M. C. Herbert,who was recently elcetod to the rebel Congress from Texas, but who was not with the captured. It had been known for a day or two, that there was a rebel camp within five miles-distance, and to it the aforesaid ofour troops, devoted six lidars: of this mornin-'. with the above success. .‘lt;o complete was the sui prise, that but two escaped.
